PC school board requests $2.3 million from MAPS for Kids

Requests for MAPS for Kids funds for two district projects were approved by the Putnam City school board Monday evening. The requests, totaling nearly $2.3 million, would be used to develop athletic areas at Putnam City West High School and to upgrade security and the computer network at the new Central Elementary School now under construction.
The nearly $1.97 million Putnam City West project would include reconfiguring the baseball and softball fields and adding four tennis courts complete with lighting and bleachers. The project would also include the construction of a building to house a press box, concession stand, restrooms, ground maintenance equipment and storage.
At Central Elementary School, the request for $307,000 would be used to cover the costs of a burglar alarm, security cameras and the cable, connectors and other equipment necessary to connect classrooms and offices to the district network, District Director of Communications Steve Lindley said. The requests will be forwarded to the MAPS for Kids Trust for consideration.
After discussion with the district’s financial advisor, Steve McDonald, concerning the feasibility of selling bonds in the present economic climate, board members voted to set Tuesday, Dec. 9, for the sale of $12,140,000 in general obligation bonds. Board Member Gail LoPresto asked if the board could call off the sale prior to the Dec. 9 date if the need arose. Mr. McDonald assured the board that the sale could be canceled by a vote at a special meeting by Dec.8. He had earlier advised that the sale could be postponed or canceled if the market dictated it.
Executive Director of Finance Shannon Meeks presented the final operating budget summary for fiscal year 2008-2009. With projected expenditures in the general fund budget of $115.7 million and projected income of $115.9 million, the fund balance as of June 30, 2009 should be approximately $3.4 million. Local and state revenues contribute a majority of the district’s income, he said.
At the end of the meeting, the board conducted it second work session to discuss any matter of district business including, but not limited to, financial, personnel, administrative, educational, physical facilities and curriculum issues and enrollment. No action was taken.
